AbstractThe Multi-Digit Technologies (MDT) testing technique is discussed as the first major advance in computer assisted testing in several decades. The MDT testing method uses fill-in-the-blank or completion-type questions, with an alphabetized long list of possible responses. An MDT answer sheet is used to record the code number of the answer. For computer scoring, the answer cells are filled in with a soft pencil. Part A of this work gives the background and developmental history of the MDT approach. Part B provides practical instructions on how to use the method, including many helpful hints discovered in the 4 years of development and testing. In Part C, four chapters focus on the educational implications of the MDT techniques. Key topics include: (1) cognitive achievement and retention; (2) mastery training; (3) financial costs and benefits; (4) higher order learning; and (5) research and development. These fundamentals explain how MDT techniques can improve education while lowering costs. The MDT method can allow up to 1,000 alternative responses. The computer's memory of the words that correspond to each label number means vastly improved feedback for students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Appendix 1 gives computer program documentation and installation instructions. Appendix 2 is a warning about unauthorized copying of computer software. Appendix 3 is a list of the MDT answer banks available as of February 1987. (SLD)
